Re: End of April 2014- Stef

If it makes you feel any better, I had a few of my birthdays growing up that were celebrated on a different day because Dad was out of town. It basically just meant I got two special days. :) fun letter. We are excited to have you up here.

My show went well.  Its really neat to see the hand of the Lord throughout the whole experience.  Somehow when it comes down to show time, He makes things happen that I know I am not even capable of doing, and helps me do better than I even had in practice.  I love doing it and I love when its over :).  It made for an exhausting Easter but luckily Nick and your family are all so fun that I knew the kids were having a great time!

Tomorrow is Nick and I's 7th anniversary.  It seems like our life has passed by like it were as a dream (what scripture quote is that??? :) ).  We won't really get to celebrate it tomorrow since Nick is headed up to work in SL, but we are always grateful to have each other and will celebrate another day.  We celebrated Bret's 6th birthday yesterday by going to jumping jacks (one of those bounce house places) and a children's museum that's new down here.  We also had pizza and devil's food cake.  It was a fun day for us all. Nick will be in SL for Bret's birthday on wednesday so we did it early.  I also have dance that night, sometimes life gets in the way of a good party on your real birthday right?  Oh well.  Still fun times.

Today in Sacrament meeting a new couple in our ward spoke on enduring to the end and enduring trials.  I loved a poem the wife (who is also my friend Micadyn from dance) read that's from the perspective of a missionary.  He is in a tough spot, work is slow and he seems to have a struggling attitude, he doesn't like the humidity or sweating all the time or wearing a bike helmet. and so on.... in it he is uttering a desperate prayer to Heavenly Father explaining all these things and also that he is so sorry he feels that way, but he even sometimes just wants to go home.  (I would imagine most every missionary has felt that way, we know even Pres. Hinckley did).  After his prayer he falls asleep and has a dream where he meets the Savior who in clever rhyming ways tells the missionary that He has felt these same types of pains like sweating drops of blood, wearing a crown of thorns (instead of a helmet like the elder) and He wanted to let the cup pass from Him if at all possible.  IT was really touching I hadn't heard it before, the next day the elder wakes up and is ready to really go to work because he knows he is not alone, but that the Savior is with him and has felt the same kinds of pains before.  Sometimes perspective is all it takes to help us endure our current challenges.  Know that whatever trials or struggles you have, Christ has felt them and He is so willing to help you get through it.

We sure love you and hope its a great week.
Love,

Great letter Stef - thanks for taking time to write.  After our long talk about trying to figure out life last night, all I could get off to Max was a quick: "I love ya bro!".

Happy Anniversary!

Loves,

Nick

Hola familia!!!! How are ya´ll!! I hope all is going well! Thank you all for your letters!

I want to thank you also for your prayers. They are working!

We are seeing progress with Fran. Though he wasnt able to come to church yesterday...he is growing closer to the church in a positive way. Things were hard for a while when him and Vanessa broke up. But miracles have happened as weve seen him and Sergio (the less active that Elder Peña and I helped bring back) are becoming the best of friends. Fran even admitted last week that he knows that the Lord has placed Sergio in his life for a reason. THIS IS HUUUUUUGE PROGRESS!!!!! Please keep him your prayers that he may be baptized10 of May!!!!!!! Also please keep Mercedes, Sergio (investigator) Belen and Trini in your prayers. This week....we are going FULL speed to get them progressing towards baptism.

This week, the mission is doing a consagration (consecration) week. That means that all of the missionaries have specific goals to be PERFECTLY 100 percent obedient this week. Wake up, go to sleep on time. Get out the door and back in RIGHT ON TIME!!!!! No music that is outside the church, NEVER being without your comp, etc etc. Just the little rules that sometimes get forgotten, we are really focusing on this week. I know that as we are obedient with exactness....there is no doubt that we are going to see miracles. I am excited to see the progress of our investigators and my personal progress as we strive to keep all the rules....and not just because I have to...but because I WANT to!!! (DyC 58)

Well..I had a cool experience this week. I was able to share my testimony in front of over 50 college students!!

Hermano Ferrer did a presentation again in the university. Elders Rojas, Oldroyd, Rasmussen, Powell, Navarro, and I all went to support and pass out Book of Mormons afterwards. Hermano Ferrer gave his presentation about what we believe (it was a religions class) and then the crowd was free to ask questions. Right before the crowd asked the questions...he kind of paused and just said..."Hey...could we have Elder Bassett share his testimony?" haha I just kind of froze...smiled...and nodded my head. He then asked me to get up and share why I am out on the mission.

As I stood up...I had NO clue what I was going to say. I wont lie...it was a bit intimidating with TONS of people around my age just staring at me. Most of them were thinking that I am crazy for doing what Im doing. But I stood up, and just began to talk. It was so cool to see how the spirit just kind of flowed out of me. I honestly dont remember anything I said. I talked for a little while...I remember I told them where I was from and how long I had been out, but other than that...I just remember that the spirit was basically talking through me!! I know that may sound kind of weird but it was so true! IT WAS AWESOME!!!!

In the end, the presentation was pretty great! We ended up handing out 40 Book of Mormons!!!! It was a miracle! That was one of those experiences that I will never forget!

Anyways, I better be off. We have a pretty fun Pday planned :) I am super pumped for mothers day! :) Ive got the best Mom in the world. Thats one of the main things Ive learned while Ive been out here! Love you Mom! :) And I love you FAMILY! :)

Thanks for all you do! Carry on! Carry on!

Love ya´ll!

Love, Elder Bassett

Love from Mom

Dear Max,

Another wonderful week. I am sitting here feeling like a very, very blessed mom. I really think the Lord has blessed me with the most wonderful children and I hope I can be worthy of that great blessing.

This week was full of celebrations for Blaine. Dad and I were able to drive to Provo on
Thursday afternoon and attend his Law School Commencement in the Marriott Center. Even though we arrived almost an hour early, we sat on the third to back row, nose bleed section. Blaine, on the other hand, was on the floor, third row from the pulpit. Pretty cool as it is only the professors and the advanced degrees who sit on the floor. It was a wonderful program with Elder Craig Cardon of the Seventy as speaker and president Uchtdorf also sharing a few words and saying farewell to President Samuelson who is soon to leave his post as BYU president. It was a beautiful spring day and we took some pictures afterwards on the lawn with the pink trees in full bloom. Then we headed to the Olive Garden in Lehi for dinner with Krisiti's folks and the kids. Lovely day.

Then Friday afternoon we headed down to Provo again, this time to a reception at the law school where we got to have refreshments and meet some of Blaine's instructors, and then get a little personal tour of the law school and see the Carrols where Blaine spent a good part of the past three years studying. It amazes me to think of all the knowledge in Blaine's head. Wow! Anyway, then we headed over to the HFAC DeJong Concert Hall for his convocation where we enjoyed a more intimate program and Blaine was officially hooded as they called his name. He was one of the first ones and we obediently did not cheer as they asked us to hold our applause until the end. I just have to say that the Polynesians must not have heard that request because, well, they went crazy. I wanted to go crazy. I was just as proud and excited as a person could be, but I obeyed. I'm just saying! When we went outside it was raining. Dang! We took a couple pictures and then had to run to the car in the rain.

Dad and I took Gwen, Ben and Ivy to our house for the next 24 hours (I know because Gwen figured it out) so Blaine and Kristi could celebrate. We had pizza with the kids and watched movies. And on Saturday I even played Barbies with Ivy over in Nancy's basement and Ben got to sit in Nancy's massage chair. We had a fun time with them. We were planning to weed and mow and get the yard ready for Blaine's open house today, but it rained the entire day! In the evening we met Blaine and Kristi and this time they treated us to dinner at Cafe Rio as a thank you.

Today was a busy Sabbath for me. I went to a 9-noon block. Then I got to attend a setting apart of a new ward RS presidency. Then I had to stop in the Stake offices and the Stake President caught me and we visited for a few minutes. Then all my presidency came and we oriented a new YSA presidency. Then home to fix dinner and at 4:30 we had Blaine's family, Warner, Janey, Rosey, Easton, dad and I for dinner. Then we got everything ready for Blaine's open house that Kristi had planned. That went from 6-7:30 and we had cookies, cookies and more cookies! We set up on the back patio but it got cool enough after about 45 minutes we decided to move inside. It was nice that the kids could play outside. All the Yorgs came, Karen, Rog, Ryan, Andrea and boys, Aimee, Tom and Tami and kids, Mike and kids, grandma, Regan and Jessica and kids, Robby and Christina and kids, Chelsea Applegate, Bruce and Jeannie, Ben and Brittany and Charlotte, Don and Jan and Jen and Ashley. I think there were about 57 if I counted right. Blaine has got to feel loved. It worked out really well. I'm glad Kristi organized it. And people were so nice to bring cookies.

Well I will close with something that has been on my mind all week. In the Ensign there was a beautiful article on the atonement and it compared the King James Version with added insights from the Joseph Smith Translation of the events accompanying it. I have always wondered about how Peter, James and John could fall asleep while Jesus was going through such an amazing experience in the garden of Gethsemane. Reading the JS Translation I understood better that they were succumbing to the feeling of sorrow and heaviness they felt. And that it was them, not Jesus, who said "the spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak." But the most amazing part to me is that then, filled with compassion, Jesus watched and waited while the disciples slept, not wanting to wake them. It just struck me that after all the anguish Jesus had been through, all the depth of pain and sorrow that we can't even being to understand, that He was still compassionate, that He was patient, that He just let them finish their sleep.

I love the Savior. Imagine if we could even have a small part of His perfect love in our hearts towards those around us. To have that kind of patience and love for others is truly amazing. My heart is full of gratitude. He is the perfect example. What a privilege that you bear His name on your name tag and that you are a special witness of Him each day. We pray for you. We pray for Sergio and Fran. Have a great week.

Love,
Mom

Letter from Blaine--April 27, 2014

Hi Max,

First, may I say that I am sorry you didn't get to experience much of Semana Santa (or Semana "fetching" Santa as your roommate called it… :) That really surprised me; I remember it being more or less inescapable and pretty fun and memorable to see. Well, anyway, we'll have to go back and experience it together someday after you get home. :) Also, I was excited to hear about your Dia de Blanco goals. I hope that is going well. Goals like that can be really motivating when you are feeling faithful and kind of frustrating when you are not. As you've discovered, it seems to be a real trick to get anyone in the water in Spain, so I'm very impressed and proud of your continuing faith that those baptisms are right around the corner, even though they have been fairly elusive so far. Keep that faith and let it carry you through the entire mission. Whether you baptize ten people yourself on Dia de Blanco or reach the end of your time in Spain without the honor of taking anyone into the waters of baptism, you will be blessed to know for the rest of your life that you did your part and the Lord was pleased with your efforts. Know that we are proud of your efforts here too and just praying for you to start seeing some baptismal fruits.

Well, this was a very exciting week for me. I'll warn you now—I'm not really trying to edit this for relevance or interest. On the contrary, I want to record as much detail as I can remember for my own sake, so if you can only skim some of what follows, I will understand. The big news: I graduated this week! I am done with law school. It is a great feeling and it has been a GREAT week. The first half was actually extremely difficult. I had two papers due before Wednesday at noon. I spent about 30 hours on them between Monday morning and Wednesday at 10AM when I turned them in. I compared it to the last 0.2 miles of the marathon. You're dead tired and somehow, rather than things winding down and getting easier, that last little bit is jut the hardest thing of all. Anyway, I finished the work on Wednesday morning, went on a run to clear my head and get some steps in (since I knew we would be having a big dinner that night), and then came home and showered and got ready for commencement.

We drove to the school with Kristi's parents and met Mom and Dad there (I actually didn't see them until after the ceremony). I had a few errands to do before things got underway so I was running around trying to clean out my desk, turn in my keys, sell back my books, get my cap and gown, etc., while Kris and the kids were going to the Cougareat trying to spend the rest of the money I had on my student card. :) By the time I got everything done, I was very nearly late for lining up to go into the ceremony. I got to the sea of graduates lined up in the parking lot across from the Marriott and it was a huge tender mercy that, though I couldn't find one familiar face of any law student, I randomly ran into my best friend Trent who was also running late. We found the J.D.s together and were able to sit together through the ceremony, which was really fun. The speaker was from the Seventy, I can't remember his name right now. His talk was nice, but, yeah, I guess it wasn't the very most memorable commencement speech ever given. I guess I had a lot on my mind too. A fun surprise was that President Uchtdorf was also in attendance and said a few words (though he was not the featured speaker). The doctoral students get to sit down on the floor so I was on the third row and I don't think I've ever been so close to him before. It was a fun ceremony.

Afterwards, we met up with Mom and Dad, took a lot of pictures, and eventually made our way back to the cars to wait in a lot of traffic to try to get back to the freeway. But first, with the final bit of money on my student card, I ran to the Twilight Zone (you know the little food store that is part of the Bookstore) to buy my favorite treat—two Grannie B's frosted sugar cookies (one pink and one black and white). So yummy! :)

We drive north to American Fork to get away from some of the restaurant traffic around Provo. We went to Olive Garden and nice Mom and Dad paid not only for my meal but for the whole family. Very generous of them and a really fun meal to just visit and enjoy having all the pressure off. It was fun to stay up late watching shows with Kristi that night too, knowing that I didn't have to wake up for anything early the next day.

Thursday I slept in and then went on a long run (~15 miles), again because I love doing so when I have time and because I knew that the day would be full of good food that I wanted to enjoy guiltlessly. We packed the kids bags and headed out the door to go to the second half of graduation, Convocation. We left later than we should have and then when we were almost to our freeway exit, I realized I had forgotten the tickets! :(  I was so distraught and Kristi's dad was the hero to go back and get them. We had left his car at the park-and-ride right by our exit, so we only had to backtrack about ten minutes to get him to his car and then he took care of the rest. Again, we met Mom and Dad at the school, where there was a really nice reception right in front of the law school. I had such a nice time there and only wished we had gotten there earlier to enjoy it longer. I got to introduce the family to a lot of my law school friends and give them a tour of the school. You know how fun Mom and Dad are to show around things like that. They seemed to just love seeing where I studied and took pictures of me in different class rooms and asked questions about the library etc. What to me was the drudgery of the last three years was to them a really interesting window into my life and it was really fun to show them around. Another highlight was getting approached by some of my favorite professors who were very busy and trying to talk to lots of people but made an effort to come talk to me and meet my family too. Not that you know them, but for the record, Professor Smith, Professor Jones, and Professor Moore all were very kind to come meet us. Also we got an explanation from Dean Rasband himself about why they call a very non-fishbowl-like lobby the "Fishbowl" as he happened to overhear a question as he was rushing by. The reception was really fun.

Eventually I had to leave the family and head over to the HFAC where the ceremonies were held in the DeJong Concert Hall. Out of 150 people, I was about fourth in line (alphabetically), which meant that I had to actually pay attention to what we would have to do because I was one of the first and couldn't necessarily count on just following everybody else like a sheep. It was a really nice ceremony and I enjoyed every minute. Two students (Gage and Geidy, for the record) gave nice talks, there was a beautiful musical number that my friend Jessica sang (I guess we're not that good of friends—I had no idea she sang!) and then the featured speaker was Guido Calabresi, a judge on the Second Circuit. The entire program was just really well done and I felt very honored and sentimental and it was a perfect capstone to feel like something really had been accomplished, a big part of life was really done.

I was greeted afterwards by the kids and the ADORABLE posters they had made for me. Then, I said a few much-too-quick goodbyes to good friends that I had been close to for three years, ran out into the rain (good thing we had gotten some pictures the day before!) to return my cap and gown and get my free BYU shirt, and met the family at the cars to turn over the kids to Mom and Dad for the night so that Kristi and could have a date night. Oh, and on my way, I ran into my evidence teacher who said she had already finished grading our tests and that I did really well (that was the best news of the day, since I was really worried about that class!).

Kristi and I were so excited to have a night off, we hardly knew what to do with ourselves. We eventually ended up in Sandy at a TGI Fridays where we had a coupon and seeing a dollar movie about a WWII mission to save artwork in Europe. We wanted to stay out later than we did but both of us were so exhausted that we made it home by about 11:30 and hit the hay.

Saturday was part two of our date. We slept in later than I have slept since I don't know when, and then we made plans to go see another show but ended up just cleaning out our house and trying to get it ready for the new baby the whole day. It may not sound like a super fun date activity, but it was one of those things that has to get done and it was actually fun to talk (and not be interrupted by kids) as we did it. It was much more conducive to communication than the movie would have been. :) We met Mom and Dad at Café Rio where we bought them dinner this time (we are trying to get rid of some gift cards that we bought around Christmas) and we got the kids back, who had had a great time with Mom and Dad.

Finally, today, we went to church for a regular sacrament meeting (actually, it was a missionary homecoming and was fun to think of what it will be like when you get home. I hope we will be able to see you speak in church or at least see you relatively soon after you get home. Hopefully if Easton is going to Austin, you will have a good excuse to come visit us soon after you get home too… ;). Then after that meeting, there was another meeting where they split the ward. They showed us the new boundaries and then called new bishoprics, etc. We had no classes today nor will we have them for the next two weeks as both wards kind of get on their feet. So that is kind of a fun and different thing! :)

Tonight we had a reception at Mom and Dad's that Kristi planned with lots of help from Mom and Nancy and others. It wasn't too intense—we didn't try to have lots of different hors d'oeuvres or a dinner or anything—just lots of people bringing lots of different types of cookies and brownies and such. But we did have a really fun turnout of people. Every Yorgason except Caroline made it (which, as you can imagine, is alone a big group), a lot of Winders, a good handful of Bassetts, and a sprinkling of Genessys. Unfortunately, no non-family friends made it, but a lot of that is because very few were even invited—I really don't have a lot of non-family friends right now in my life and, at least as long as we're this close to so much awesome family, I guess that's okay! :) I really enjoyed talking to everybody and it was just a delightful night.

Okay, that is way more detail than anyone needs, so I apologize. But I'm glad I have it recorded for my own sake. It was a really important and meaningful event in my life and I'm so grateful to everyone who has helped make it possible, both by what they have done in the last three days, and what they have done in the last three years. Unfortunately, the work is not over. I need to wake up early tomorrow morning and begin the next phase—studying for the patent bar and then the Texas state bar. So there is plenty of work still ahead. But I keep coming back to the truth in Elder Bednar's talk from conference, that having a load is a good thing. I think that is true for me, and I don't resent having to keep working hard even though I am happy that it will be kind of a change of pace from the school work that has kept me busy for the last three years.

Anyway, hope this week is a good one for you. Sure love ya!

Love,
Blaine

9:35 PM

Dear Max,

We continue to pray always on your behalf and for those you teach.

Questions:

  1. How is the Dia de Blanco coming?  I hope Fran and the rest of the hit parade are prepping, and Lord is doing his part to help them feel his spirit over and over and over again.  Don't give up!  Sometimes the Lord waits until the last possible moment to bless us for our faithfulness (after the trial of your faith). The drama of watching you give and give and give for him seems to please the Lord as he watches your continual sacrifice.  I've always wondered if you were to promise that you would keep working hard regardless of the payoff, if he wouldn't give you greater results because he would know your effort wasn't dependent on your payoff.  Does that make sense?  In other words, what if the baptisms aren't why you were sent out there (or any missionary).  But you were sent out to learn how to listen to the spirit and respond to it.  And that to see if you would always listen and respond, regardless of the payoff from the Lord?  His greatest soldier that he could trust to do his work, would be a person who worked hard, sacrificed constantly, and was obedient regardless of the payoff.
  2. Is your car working?  For awhile it was broken and you couldn't figure out what was wrong.  I guess it must be working because your because you were going to give a ride to the Elders in your apartment a ride to the Bishops house (or something) because the bus was only working 2x that day…because of the 'Semana  Fetchin Santa'.  I was impressed to see the video sent by one of your elders in your apartment to his mom.  It was fun to see you and your companion praying, and then heading out the door first.  I'm always impressed when a companionship is unified and ready to get out there to work.  Cuz it's hard.  The companion of the Elder was only half dressed when you were heading out to work.  This was on the day when the bus only ran 2x that day.  He might have been sick.  Cuz you said how you knew that the lord would bless those who worked even when they thought they were sick.
  3. How do you want Mother's day to go?  Can you do Google + hangout again?  That seemed to work better than Skype.   Do you want bros and sisters and grandkids?  Do you want Easton?  How long?  I know Mom would like some 1:1 time with you… but I don't think it needs to be the whole time.  Tell us your thoughts so we can prepare.

Events:

This has been Blaine Week.  Graduation events, dinners, tending kids, open house, etc. etc. etc.  It has been sooooo fun to be able to just sit back and enjoy him and Kristi and the Kids.  Since none of the bros and sisters were able to come to the ceremonies (and subsequent dinner) we got a lot of time to just visit with all the waiting that happens at these kind of events.  And it was so satisfying.  We loved the speakers, the crowds, and the excitement that is associated with graduation, and especially of such a big one such as law school.  I just can't think about losing the Blaine Bassetts (each and everyone of them) to Texas in a few short months.

Thoughts:

One of my new favorite scriptures:  D&C 6:33-34, 36:

29 Verily, verily, I say unto you, if they reject my words, and this part of my gospel and ministry, blessed are ye, for they can do no more unto you than unto me.

30 And even if they do unto you even as they have done unto me, blessed are ye, for you shall dwell with me in glory.

31 But if they reject not my words, which shall be established by the testimony which shall be given, blessed are they, and then shall ye have joy in the fruit of your labors.

32 Verily, verily, I say unto you, as I said unto my disciples, where two or three are gathered together in my name, as touching one thing, behold, there will I be in the midst of them—even so am I in the midst of you.

33 fear not to do good, my sons, for whatsoever ye sow, that shall ye also reap; therefore, if ye sow good ye shall also reap good for your reward.

34 Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot prevail.

35 Behold, I do not condemn you; go your ways and sin no more; perform with soberness the work which I have commanded you.

36 Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.

Have a wonderful week.  Give them heaven!

Love Dad

End of April 2014- Stef

Dear Max,

How's life in Spain?  We are about a month away from moving up to Salt Lake which is c-razy!  We had such a great weekend last weekend with visits from Bassetts and Morris' and it gets harder and harder for the kids to have family leave.  We are too excited to be closer! ;)

Love,

Hey Max,

I'm really excited to hear about your week. This has been a wild but fun and eventful week for us.

Last Sunday evening I drove up to mom and dads and spent Monday thru Wednesday working at my new job. I'll be working on the physician payment model Intermountain is piloting. It felt a little bit like drinking from a fire hose but it went well.

I got home on Wednesday night, ran to mutual, hung out with my kids, and got to doing homework. I worked Thursday but was so exhausted by the end of the day I decided I was going to take Friday off to try and rejuvenate a little bit. We had an AWESOME weekend with mom and dad, Janey and Warner and Rosey. We certainly missed Blaine and Kristi and family and...you. They were so nice to come to Stef's dance show on Saturday night and just help out and play with the kids. Highlights included a fun Easter dinner and spiritual lesson (and the money eggs....clay got the $20). Going to Stef's show, swimming a couple of times, hiking in snow canyon, seeing captain Amrica , celebrating mom and dads anniversary at Apollo burger, watching Walter Mitty, eating ice cream and hard sauce, playing light saber wars with the kids, etc etc.

We have such a great family. Thanks again everyone for being so fun and helping out so much with the kiddos.

Stef wants me to tell you hi and keep up the great work!!

We love you!

Hey Bro,

We just got back from St. George to see Stefs dance concert. It was really good and an uplifting experience. I'm glad I could go. We, of course, had a great time. But St. George always makes me miss you extra for some reason. We did a lot of hiking, swimming , and eating. It was a wonderful weekend. My highlight was having light saber fights with Bret and Clay because they would get so into it. I love how much they miss you. One of the nights I was holding Clay and he said, "hey, your thumb looks exactly like max's." It made me laugh for some reason. Either you have feminine hands , or I have man hands. I'm thinking the latter.

I hope your Easter was wonderful. I bet you learned a lot about the culture during this week. Hopefully it was a cool experience for you. My Easter miracle was that my "water proof" case ended up not being so water proof and my phone stopped working. I was so bummed. But Warner suggested I put the phone in rice to let it dry out, and low and behold, 36 hours later right after saying my prayers, the phone turned on. It was so awesome!

I know the Savior lives max! And I know he loves each of us individually. I'm so grateful for this knowledge. I hope you can continue moving forward with that knowledge.

We have the greatest family bro!

Love you,

Rosey

Week 57 - Max - "Wha...is that...NEDDY????!!!??!!?!"

Hola Familia! :)

How are ya´ll?! HAPPY LATE EASTER TO EVERYONE!!! Hope it all went well! Update on the big Semana Santa.....nothing....haha I didnt see anything!!! Having a car and working in the pueblos can be difficult because youre not really part of the culture. Elder Rojas and I saw a bunch of big crowds in centro, but we never saw any big events :( And it kind of hit me that I very well might not spend another Easter in Spain to see the Semana Santa....super weird and kind of sad....

Another big newsflash just hit me today....that everything isnt the same as when I left. I saw a photo of Neddy from this week and it BLEW ME AWAY!!!! I literally cant believe how big he is!!! He looks about 2 years old. I just remember him as a little tiny baby not even able to hold his head up yet!! hahaha That is so awesome. Nick and Stef...I hope you are showing plenty of pics to show who his favorite uncle is (sorry Blaine) ;) haha

Well, despite the fact that we didnt see any Semana Santa, this week has been great! :) Elder Rojas and I are continuing to work as hard as we can for our big Dia de Blanco!! The Lord has helped us to set another Baptismal fecha with Sergio. I dont know if I talked about him last week, but we met him through Pepe, a menos activo who is wanting to come back to church. He introduced us to Sergio, and it was great. Though Sergio is very very very very game to talk about his life experiences for hours and hours, he is super interested in the gospel.

He told us he just feels different with us and wants to keep feeling the peace that he has. He said that when he recieves his answer...he will be baptized on May 10 to ALWAYS have that feeling with him. Miracles are just pouring out the door every day! Please keep Sergio in your prayers.
Bishop Rica is also super pumped all of the sudden about missionary work. He is just inviting all of his friends to english class, church, activities, etc etc. We plan to set another fecha with Belen and Trini (Bishops friends) this week. Please keep them in your prayers.

Fran called us and wants us to come over on Tuesday. Vanessa (the girlfriend) said that he has been reading the LDM. We are hoping and praying that everything goes well tomorrow. Fran would be an amazing leader in the church. I hope so bad to see him in white :) :) Please keep Fran in your prayers.

Today we have here in centro just shopping as a district. It is POURING rain so we are soaking wet, but it has been pretty fun. I bought some super awesome slacks, so Mom...if you see the money drop a little bit in my account...youll know why :) But it has been really fun! I LOVE EUROPE!!! And especially Spain!!!!!! :)

Well thank you all so much for your letters and your support! It is so nice to know that I have family and friends that love and support me so much. Tonight, in a family home evening, we are going to give a lesson about the importance of family because one of the teenage sons is starting to drift from the church. We are going to give the example that a family is like a book. You take one page and it can be torn easily....but you take a whole bunch of pages (a book) and it cant be torn at all. That is just like the family. If we are united, WITH THE GOSPEL, we cannot be torn! Ever!!!! And how grateful I am to have a "yellow pages" family that is built SOLID ROCK in the gospel. I love you guys so much! :)
A vencer a vencer! The church is true! :)

Sure love you guys!
Love, Elder Bassett

Re: Week 57 (t-minus 47) - Easter Week

Fun letter dad and I liked your summary of the boys.  I guess after living with them each day we kind of just assume everyone knows those things about them, but I you articulated well how they are.  They're all so different and so fun.

Kristi, I think our family's favorite is a pina-colada shaved ice avalanche style.  I think a lot of people go their to get "dirty" sodas whey they put different flavors in sodas.  I'm not a big soda guy though, so I usually get a shaved ice and sugar cookie (also good but PALE in comparison to Jane's sugar cookies).

I think there is one in Provo and there might even be one up North somewhere.

Enjoy :)

Week 57 (T-minus 47) - Easter Week

Dear Max:

Bullets from the Week:

  • Ned is adorable.  I hope you get the chance to see him while he is in his unbelievably cute phase.  He looks just like me when I was a little boy.
  • Clay talks non-stop.  And he is always asking questions.  I guess it's a little how Warner was as a kid, and see how smart he turned out.
  • Bret is such a polite little guy.  When we left St. George this weekend, he must have given me 3 hugs just to get his hugs in.  I feel like he is kind and sweet.  He is also getting drops in his eye to dilate them when he goes to bed each night.  He is so conscientious.
  • Stef is such a talented dancer.  We saw her performance in St. George this weekend and I was so impressed with her gifted dancing talents.  She does things on stage I didn't know the human body could do - balance on one leg while turning posed.  More than ever I apprecaite the amazing things a dancer can do with their body.  And the beauty that they can show.  Dance like most things can be used for good and for evil.  It is so beautiful when it is done for good.
  • New place in St. George you have to go to when you get home - Swigs.  They make a mean hawaiian Ice drink with ice cream in the bottom.  It's one of those places that has popped up and is wildly successful…like Jdawgs.
  • Probably our last week in St. George going to N&S's ward.  I'll miss those good people.  They were always kind to us whenever we attended, and I felt like we were getting closer to them.  Oh well, another example that there isn't a dog ward in the whole church.
  • Clay was the big $20 egg winner.  He was a great winner since he didn't really know what a $20 bill could buy, but he could see by the envy in everyone elses eyes that he had scored something good.  It was fun.  Other winners included: Rosey(?)$10, Blaine $5, Ivy $5
  • We were coming home from St. George tonight with bets on when we would make it home…I won, because I was latest, and just as we were coming in, we met Blaine and Kristi at Smith's to give them their eggs (they were one their way back to their house in Saratoga Springs.)  So we got in about 30 minutes later than anyone had guessed.

Spiritual Thought:

  • I loved this from Pres. Joseph Fielding Smith

"So the Lord sent his messengers from his presence, with the fulness of the gospel, and with power, and the authority of the priesthood to bestow upon men, and gave them commandments … because the Lord knew the calamities which were to come upon the world, and it was his will that a proper warning, and the opportunity to receive the gospel be given unto men that they might repent and turn from their evil ways and serve the Lord [see D&C 1:17–23].4

"We announce that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the kingdom of God on earth, the only place where men may come to learn the true doctrines of salvation and find the authority of the holy priesthood.5

"My beloved brethren and sisters: I am grateful beyond any measure of expression for the blessings the Lord has given to me, and to the faithful members of his church in the various nations of the earth, and to all his children everywhere.

"I thank him every day of my life that he has restored in these last days his everlasting gospel for the salvation of all who will believe and obey its laws.6"

May the Lord bless you every day - and may you rejoice as I do to be able to be called a member of his church.

Love,

Dad

Re: Letter from Blaine, April 20, 2014

Great letter Blaine.  I read this just after watching the men and women finishers of the Boston marathon (what an emotional experience!...haha).  Thinking about you finishing your degree in a few weeks somehow feels equally if nor more intense than what these runners have just accomplished.  You've committed your life to this the last several years and you're about to cross the finish line.  During the little intro clip to the marathon they talk about how for most, the finish line is only just a new beginning.  This is obviously much more applicable for you...graduation not only marks the end of an intense phase of your life but in some ways is even a more significant indicator of a new beginning for you.

We're sad we won't be able to join in person at graduation, but I hope you know how impressed and proud of you we are!! What an amazing accomplishment!!

Re: Easter love

Thanks Mom! I loved your story about Desi (spanish Sunday school teacher) commenting that the main reason she'll miss Stef and I in the ward is because she'll missing having you and the girls in her RS classes.   Somehow you all are visiting every single time she teaches.  Pretty classic!

Thanks again for such a fun week.  The easter egg hunt, the movie and dinner, the fun day at snow canyon, and more.  We're so excited (and sad at the same time) to be leaving our beloved St. George but really look forward to joining the party (and the normal life too) up in Salt Lake.

Love you!

Dear Max,

It's always kind of boggy getting home from St George, but we surely had a great weekend.  I will give a quick rundown.

Late Thursday night, five of us (Janey, Warner, Rosey, dad and I) all traveled down in my car after Rose got home from work late.  We were cozy and had great visits all the way.  Yorgasons are always so kind to share their home.  We missed them but it was just Bassett's this time. We all slept in on Friday morning and Janey and Warner made a tasty ranch breakfast while I was on my run.  Then some of us hiked to Charlie's and in the afternoon Nick and Stef and kids came over for swimming.  I cannot believe how grown up little Neddy looks.  I don't know if it was his cute buzz hair cut or what, but he no longer looks like a baby but a little boy.  He just has the brightest smile!  Nick and Stef got a babysitter and we all went to see the new Captain America movie.  Dad had already seen it, but you know dad, always up for a repeat.  We then picked up the boys to go to dinner and could not decide where to go for dinner.  (Side note: it was mine and dad's 34th wedding anniversary that day.) We tried Texas Roadhouse but there was over an hour wait!  St George definitely needs more restaurants.  We ended up at Apollo burger which was really tasty!  Then home for another movie downstairs. (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty). This is really uncharacteristic of me to list movies but I really like that movie!  It was fun because Nick's family spent the night at the house.  Oh, and for the record, this is one of the first times Rosey got a bed to herself at the St. George house!

On Saturday Stef was at her dance practice all day.  The rest of us went for a hike in Snow Canyon.  The boys took their scooters and we figured we covered about 4 miles on the trail!  It was beautiful weather to start out but by afternoon we were toasty!  Nick treated us to a slushy thing on the way home.  After more swimming we dyed a bunch of Easter eggs and the did an Easter candy hunt in the back yard.  It was so warm that most of the chocolate candy had melted!  But it was lots of fun running around finding candy (that most of us had helped hide)

That night was Stef's concert.  That was the main reason for our trip and we were well rewarded!  It was held at the Dixie college auditorium and was great!  I know you saw this program a couple of years ago at the church house, but this venue made it so much better!  Their printed programs had descriptive comments to help you interpret each number.  The whole thing is based on events in the life of Christ.  Very beautiful!  Stef did just great and is such a beautiful dancer.  Rosey was trying to pull some of the moves in the kitchen afterwards and let's just say we all got an even better appreciation for Stef's talent!

Today we all went to their 9 am church.  It was such a lovely Easter Sunday.  I love
Easter.  This past week dad had shared a church you tube video called "Because of Him."  I have watched it several times and it is powerful to me and helped make my personal celebration of our Savior's atonement and resurrection more meaningful.  It was wonderful the strong companionship of the Spirit I felt as I worshipped today.  As we sang the words to He is risen "sing it out with Joyful voice" my heart was so full of the amazing event the resurrection is and how we can't be too joyful over it.  A feeling of gratitude just washed over me!  Although Easter is full of candy and bunnies and eggs, I am so thankful that it isn't over commercialized like Christmas.  I'm thankful that we can go to church and partake of the sacrament and renew these feelings every single week!

After church we ate ham and potatoes and did a short spiritual Easter program and then opened the money eggs (got to carry on that tradition). Clay got the $20 and Rosey got a $10.  We headed home mid afternoon, knowing that it may be our last time to visit Nick and Stef in their home there.  Kind of a sad thought but we are soooo excited to have them closer here in a month or so.

We ended up meeting Blaine and Kristi and kids in the parking lot of Smiths as we were almost home.  They were just heading home from her family event and we had to give them their $ eggs (even though the big bills were gone.).  We visited and ate more candy and it struck me what a fun family we are since we can even have fun in a Smiths parking lot!

So that covers the fun of the week.  The other days were spent working PT and in the temple.  Not that the temple isn't fun!   Oh news flash about work.  It looks like Wade's son Jordan wants the job for the summer so I will have the summer off.  Hurray!!

I'm excited to hear about your week.  The sister who taught Relief Society today in Nick's ward is from Spain (you probably remember her - very friendly lady). She talked about the strong traditions and celebrations that go with Easter in Spain.  I can't wait to hear from you!

I better close because I want you to have time to tell us all about your week.  Sure love and miss you.

Love,
Mom

Re: Happy Easter

I need to meet Oscar.  He seems like a good friend to have :)

Those are definitely all highlights for us as well.  I'm so glad everyone else got to enjoy the fun age Neddy is at.  It's a good thing he's so darn cute because this is definitely probably the hardest age with kids as far as trying to do something (like sit in a concert, sleep somewhere, foreign, etc.).  You were all so much help, you probably won't know how grateful we are until you're the one with a 16 month old trying to join the family parties.  You're all awesome!

Loves

Nick

Hey Max-

I love you and hope you had a good Easter week. I'm anxious to hear about the fun/crazy/interesting things you encountered this Easter. I'll give a quick recap of my week:

-Monday morning a showed up at work with 10 bags of Cotton Candy sitting on my desk. Story behind this one: the previous week we had one of the employees who works at the Maverick Center (aka E-Center) come in to get x-rayed as he thought he broke something (I think I've told you that Oscar is the doctor for the Grizzly Hockey team. He also helps out the employees who work there.) Anyway, Oscar was telling us that this guy was the "cotton candy maker." I told Oscar that I liked cotton candy and asked if next time he was at a game, he would get me a bag (because he gets everything for free.) He then asked if I was serious and I told him that I did like it and I was always too cheap to pay for it when I went to events where they sold it. He then says, "okay, I'll text Augie" (the manager-ish guy over the Maverick Center) and tells him I want some cotton candy. I told him I didn't care that much and I just thought that he could maybe grab me a bag next time he was there…..I didn't feel like this needed to go to a managerial level. I told him to stop and not to worry about it but he said I had asked for it and now I was going to get it. My coworker was teasing me and so I asked if she wanted some to which she said "yes." I told Oscar to get 2 bags if he was going to go to all this effort. After a few mins of texting with Augie, Oscar yells out, "I got you 10 bags of Cotton Candy. I'll bring them in Monday." As promised, I had 10 bags sitting on my desk. Haha. I was sad I got there after Oscar as I would have LOVED to watch him carry all those bags in. He said he was extra careful because he didn't want to smash them. Don't worry, I didn't keep all the bags….I distributed them to everyone in the office and kept two for myself. It was a yummy little treat…..and a funny experience.

-I'm sure you'll hear different synopsis of St. George, highlights to me from our quick trip:

-Sitting in the middle seat of mom's CRV between Rose and Warner (okay…not my favorite thing but we were thankful to get a ride with them.)

-80 degree weather. I have a Rudolph red nose to prove I played outside! I hate that I don't tan like I did as a kid.

-Hiking to Charlies and then hiking on the trail in Snow Canyon. This was probably my favorite part!

-Forgetting all my makeup and going "all-natural" for the trip. I hated it because I've had some huge (painful) zits and my red nose I would have loved to have tried to hide, but then I loved it because I played outside/swam most of the day anyway so it didn't really matter.

-Seeing little Neddy and Bret and Clay….but especially Ned. He is just so darn cute and I wish you could just see him for one day while he is the age that he is. He is a cutie with the cutest teeth and smile.

-Stef did awesome in her dance recital! Very cool how they can tell stories of Christ's life through dance.

I'll stop there. It was a fun trip. Of course we talked about you. There was one point where we were kind of laughing at a person who was acting strange and Rose said, "I really wish Max were here…he would really appreciate that."

Love ya! We are praying for you daily.

Love, Janey

Re: Fun weekend in St. George

I was sooo happy when we found out your phone still worked.  Thanks for the tip Warner!!!

It was so nice of you to all come down and join us.  We really do have the greatest family!

Love you,

Rosey

I'll bring them in Monday." Easter from Nick

Nick

Easter love

Love,
Mom
