Max,

Here's a few words to help you with your daily spiritual nourishment.  As a missionary, I suspect that you felt a need to go by to see everyone who were making progress on the path, and to see them everyday.  Why?  Was it to waste time, was it to relax?  No it was to help them

 

And these few words that I share with you are brought to you by the letter 'R'.

 

The idea is that now you have taught the gospel for 2 years you are able to share it with anyone.  That during this time you have had numerous spiritual experiences with each of these words.  So rather than share scriptures to help you learn one of these words, I'm going to share the words, and let you remember any spiritual experience you had with the word.  Maybe it was a principle that one of your investigators had trouble with and needed you to explain to them…. Maybe it was a principle that while studying the scriptures really hit you hard…Maybe you were asked spontaneously in a branch meeting to teach the principle.  Maybe in a conversation with a companion, the word had particular meaning for you.  As a missionary I suspect you have a memory for each of these words.  Take 2 minutes - Read them aloud slowly and think about what they mean, and what they mean to you specifically.  Enjoy them, ponder them, reflect on a talk or a scripture you can recall that deals with the principle.

 

R:

• Revelation
• Restoration
• Resurrection
• Rebuke
• Rescue
• Ransom
• Reconcile
• Redeemed (Redeemer)
• Rejoice
• Remission
• Receive
• Reflect
• Retain
• Wrought
• Repent
• Renew
• And last but not least = REMEMBER

 

Mosiah 4:10-12

 10 And again, believe that ye must repent of your sins and forsake them, and humble yourselves before God; and ask in sincerity of heart that he would forgive you; and now, if you believe all these things see that ye do them.11 And again I say unto you as I have said before, that as ye have come to the knowledge of the glory of God, or if ye have known of his goodness and have tasted of his love, and have received a remission of your sins, which causeth such exceedingly great joy in your souls, even so I would that ye should remember, and always retain in remembrance, the greatness of God, and your own nothingness, and his goodness and long-suffering towards you, unworthy creatures, and humble yourselves even in the depths of humility, calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standing steadfastly in the faith of that which is to come, which was spoken by the mouth of the angel.  And behold, I say unto you that if ye do this ye shall always rejoice, and be filled with the love of God, and always retain a remission of your sins;

How can you remember your mission?

• My style is to make a list of the things you are grateful for from your mission.  And I would promise this will bless you as well. 
• The beauty of a list, is that once you start, it's hard to stop because everything seems to fit.  This list will become a treasure to you because in just a few minutes of reading it later in life, it will bring you back into the spirit of gratitude.  It might read something like this from my mission:

 

Things I loved about my mission:

• Elder Barham and I's discussions of doctrine, careers
• Opening Zeballos Cue for missionary work
• The smell of cow dung coming in the window from the neighbors cows next door
• Elder Rios telling me about the Book of Mormon's that he found with Jann/Jill's testimony inside.
• Homemade Egg Nogg
• Tuc's, Guarana, Milenesa, Sopa Paraguaya
• Stepping on a 4" bug during a 'cottage meeting'
• The beginning of the Bassett Bark…1979…carbon paper
• Elder Ezra Taft Benson's telling us to only write our girlfriends once a month - and my panic moment.
• The humility of the poor people living in shanty homes, but seeking the spirit to bless their lives.
• The spider above my hand when I first turned on the light switch
• Christmas, Dia De San Juan,
• The cathedrals
• Elder Pederson, Elder Lance, Elder Ball, and so many others I won't forget
• Testimony of relationships and love - The streets of Mburucuja
• Testimony my gratitude to have a spirit father and the sacrifice of a redeemer while walking on a dirt road

• Learning about the white indian tribe in the Chaco.

Re: Love from Mom

Great letter mom and fun comments from everyone. Speaking of losing and finding things, I was given a $100 bill back when I graduated which was of course right during our move. There were piles and stacks of papers everywhere many of which were being thrown away. At some point during the move I started searching and couldn't find it. I finally stopped looking and figured when we moved into our home it would turn up. After diligently searching again, this time I really gave up hope that I would find it. Well, just the other day Bret had been asking for weeks to go through my old junk box. I kept putting it off but finally last Sunday I gave in. As I started pulling things out there were a few things, one of which looked like a card and envelope. It didn't even occur to me what it might be. I pulled it open and sure enough, you can imagine my delight to find a crisp $100 bill. I was soooo delighted. Heck, it's just enough to go get me a new passport (loved your story mom). 

Anyways...good times!

Parenting is hard, constant work that seems to never let up.   Rewards seem few and far between.  When we are doing our best and all that we know how to do, then the Lord will make up the difference.  I know it to be true.

I can't imagine anyone raising kids without the help of two things  1) gospel principles and standards to guide them and 2) the guidance of the Spirit.  I think of things grandma Bassett used to say in regards to both of them.  1)  I would tell my kids if they didn't like a commandment or rule then to just go tell the Lord, it wasn't her fault, she was just doing what the Lord would have her do.  And 2) she one time said to me "you know, I didn't raise my kids".  She said it early in our marriage when I didn't know her as well.  I remembered thinking "what?? Who raised them?"  Then she said "the Lord raised them.  I just tried to follow the spirit."  Both those statements made an impression on me.

Miss you guys, too!  A lot!  I need to follow Rosey's example and face time with the kids!

I was just telling Blaine last night how in awe I am at how amazing every single person in the Bret and Wendy Bassett family is (and that truly extends out to the Ned/Gwen Winder and Richard/Janice Bassett families as well). I am floundering with my kids. I am at a total loss. I don't know how they can act the way they do. I can only assume that my genes are the dominant ones and Blaine had such peaceful genes that they just had to surrender to make way for my bossy, stubborn and argumentative genes to barrel through in to our posterity :). 

That is crazy that you found your passport after all this time! We found Blaine's missing one as we prepped for this last move. It made it through like seven moves without being found and then cropped up on this last one. Makes me wonder if we will ever find his missing wedding ring (his FIRST missing one, we know exactly where his second missing one is :).

I'm feeling that full hearted gratitude again for EACH one of you.  And I'm at work so, dang, I can't get tearful!  I love these letters. I love how much you all respect, love, and honor each other.  That example will be passed to your children.  Thanks for taking notes Nick.

I can't believe we are basically 1.5 weeks from you coming home. We are all so excited we can hardly stand it. As I've contemplated a lot about what to write you in this, likely my last, letter to you as a missionary, I've had two main thoughts come to my mind:

The first is how much I/we all love and admire you. I hope you can feel that buoy you up and prepare you for this next phase of your life whatever that may be. As we have all watched you mature and develop and gain a strong testimony of your savior through both good and hard experiences, I think we have all deepened our admiration for what an amazing person you are. Your potential is incredible. Keep your faith in the Lord and I have no doubt at all that you'll go far!

The second thing I wanted to share with you goes all the way back to the last night we saw you right before you left on your mission. I hope you can remember us all back in Blaine and Kristi's room in Saratoga Springs as dad gave you a blessing before you departed on your mission. For me anyway it was a special privilege and moment I'll never forget. As I recall no one thought to record it so I hurried and jotted down the main points I could remember. Maybe you have the blessing recorded and I simply never knew it, but here were the only three things I wrote down: 

1 - You were blessed that things should go the way they should with Easton

2 - You were blessed with the Gift of tongues

3 - You were blessed with emotional and physical health

I hope you can feel and know how much the Lord loves you and has blessed you (and will continue to bless you) through all of your good times and hard times. 

Anyway, we sure love you. Oh youth of the noble birthright, carry on carry on carry on.

No not floundering. I don't think that for a minute.  You guys are doing great. Parenting is hard, constant work that seems to never let up.   Rewards seem few and far between.  When we are doing our best and all that we know how to do, then the Lord will make up the difference.  I know it to be true.

I can't imagine anyone raising kids without the help of two things  1) gospel principles and standards to guide them and 2) the guidance of the Spirit.  I think of things grandma Bassett used to say in regards to both of them.  1)  I would tell my kids if they didn't like a commandment or rule then to just go tell the Lord, it wasn't her fault, she was just doing what the Lord would have her do.  And 2) she one time said to me "you know, I didn't raise my kids".  She said it early in our marriage when I didn't know her as well.  I remembered thinking "what?? Who raised them?"  Then she said "the Lord raised them.  I just tried to follow the spirit."  Both those statements made an impression on me.

Miss you guys, too!  A lot!  I need to follow Rosey's example and face time with the kids!

That is crazy that you found your passport after all this time! We found Blaine's missing one as we prepped for this last move. It made it through like seven moves without being found and then cropped up on this last one. Makes me wonder if we will ever find his missing wedding ring (his FIRST missing one, we know exactly where his second missing one is :).

Wonderful letter. I am a crier and your letter brought tears. And I think it is okay to cry when things are so dear to us like your mission was to you. I just think they are tears expressing a heart full of gratitude that you got to have such an amazing experience. I realize everyone doesn't react in the same way and that's okay. But it was fun to hear that was your response even though you are not normally a crier. Thanks for sharing that.
