Re: Love from Mom

Speaking of the ugly public.  My boss told today about his 19 year old daughter who is a waitress at a restaurant in Provo (Little Italy, down by the Provo City Center Temple).  He told us that one couple came in with another 'foreign' couple to eat prior to going to the temple.  As the evening went on, the two women got angrier and angrier at the service.  The daughter kept trying to help them enjoy their dinner, but the more she tried, the angrier they got.  Finally she came up to see if she could help, and the foreigner put a bunch of food in her mouth and.... gasp... spit it out all over her.  All over her face, her hair the front of her clothes.  She was so agast, she didn't know what to say, but to make it back into the bathroom to clean up.  The manager got word and went out to talk to the table.  They got in a shouting match.  As the couples got up to leave (and not pay) his daughter was standing by the cashier and said, "I'm sorry, I hope you enjoy the temple."  And the woman (not the foreigner) said, "We can't now, because of you!"  Can you believe it.  I would be so crushed.  But then a half hour later, an old curmudgeon of a patron came in with a chip on his shoulder.  She tried to take care of him, but half way through the meal he took ahold of the plate, held it out, and dropped it on the floor so it splattered and shattered all over the tile floor.  She ran to get bussers to come help clean it up, and the manager came out and another shouting match ensured.  2 other customers just got up and left the restaurant without paying.  I couldn't believe it.  The nice end of the story was that one of BYU's basketball players was on a doubledate and saw both incidents and called over the manager to tell him what a great waitress she had been.  Another person called over the manager and gave him $100 and asked him to split it with the wiatresses who had been criticized and abused.  So there are still good people.  But I've got to say, I wonder about the future of civility.

Re: Love from Mom

Great letter my love.  I have no idea how anyone could get 'really mad' at you.  You don't deserve it. I know how people could get really mad at Rosey because her patients all have mental illnesses (not because she deserves it!).  But you get up and head off to work anyway.  I hope you have a great week.  As mom said, our old entertainment center is now broken apart into different pieces.  That's been an interesting ride.

Anyway - thanks honey for the fun letter.

Love from Mom

Dear Family,

I wanted to write a quick one before I head to bed this Sunday night. We just said goodbye to Max and Ashley and Rosey who stayed after the family dinner to play games. Ashley killed us in her first time playing Yatzee. She got two Yatzees!

I sure enjoyed my Sabbath. After our block meetings I headed down to Provo to hear Max speak in his stake conference. He also sang in the stake choir which was made up primarily of his ward and was conducted by his bishop's wife. The music was amazing and inspiring, as well as Max's 5-minute talk (and he kept it to 5 minutes). He brought a beautiful Spirit into the meeting. And nice Ashley saved me a place close to the front where I had a perfect view of Max. I loved every minute! After the conference I got to meet Max's bishop and wife and they both went on and on about what a wonderful guy Max is, how he is certainly "going places" and how he accepts every assignment with a cheerful heart. A mother's payday!

We had a family dinner with all 11 of us around the table. We missed Warner who had to work, and Blaine and Kristi's gang. Poor little Ned doesn't get a nap on Sunday and had a meltdown at the dinner table which prompted us later to put on home videos of Rosey at that age. Ashley was a good sport to watch (did she have a choice?). It was the famous one where Rosey bursts into tears and says "everyone laughed, even Blaine!" So fun. Then Ashley asked to watch Janey and Warner's wedding video and that brought back great memories, too.

A couple of highlights for the week:

-I went out to lunch with Janalee Wynn and laughed and laughed. We use to visit all the time and I just had not talked to her forever. I loved it.

-Made a "Have A Good Trip" box of homemade Oreos and snickerdoodle cookies for the Yorgs. They left Friday for their big San Diego Trip with their kids and grandkids.

-Got my hair cut from Gwen Yorgason.

-Had a patient get really mad at me at work. Flora is her name. So happy to hear she was heading out of town and I won't be seeing her this week. She's a moody one.

-Took a big load of stuff to DI. That felt good.

-Got a visit from my blind guy, as in the guy who is fixing my blinds! He is going to replace the three in the dining area. The headrails won't match the rest of the room since they don't make those head rails anymore. But at this point I just want to take my sheet down. I just hope the replacement happens fast. He is also going to replace two of my outside front window screens because, in his words, I have been so "kind and gracious" with this whole process.

-Since we didn't get any "nibbles" on the entertainment system posted on KSL classifieds, we decided to keep it. We will throw the top mantle portion away, put the table in Rosey's room and put the two bookcases in dad's office (replacing the bookcases in there.) we appreciate everyone's help in carrying stuff downstairs and out in the garage. Re: Just Do It

What a fun letter mom, thanks for sharing. It was so fun to come in and see all the new furniture! I (with Blaine) have to comment on the incredible example both you and dad were as you endured the tv trial. I'm sure there were more moments of frustration than I saw, but truly, I've hardly heard a word of complaint from either of you. Way to go!

Loves,
Nick

The bench is just 48 inches but fit the three boys (Clay did complain that is was way too hard!)

Thanks for caring enough to ask!

Sounds like when we visit next we have a lot to look forward to seeing! So how many people does the new table seat? We love having a bench (which it sounds like you have? The picture made it hard for me to tell), we can squeeze so many kids on that thing! Does your new one have a leaf or does it stay the same size? And I still haven't seen a pic of the entertainment center. What fun upgrades!

How long will the Jordan River Temple be closed for?

>
> Monday when I got home from work dad suggested that we attach the box bookshelf back on to make the whole center look nicer.  Dad had taken it apart and said it was a matter of dropping in four screws from the top mantle piece onto the box that formed the middle shelf above the tv.  So we rolled the rug back, slid out the table which held the new 60 inch tv, and with me on a stepping stool and dad holding the box shelf on his back (think Atlas holding the world) I proceeded to try and drop the 4 screws in place from above.  Looking back, it was a stupid idea!   It was MUCH harder than we anticipated and I was much weaker than dad anticipated, and after several minutes and having only one screw attach properly something happened.  I would like to see the movie in heaven to see just what happened next but I will take the blame because my arms are so weak.  The mantle piece and box were suddenly coming at me.  Dad couldn't see what was happening since he was hunched over.  I was falling off the stool, the box and mantle piece coming after me.  Dad raised up in time to see it all happen and thought I was going to be decapitated.  Thankfully I wasn't hurt beyond a few bruises and scratches, but in the falling the mantle hit the tv and knocked it forward off the table onto the floor.  When we knew we were okay, we looked at the tv.  It looked okay on the outside screen but when we turned it on we realized that there was a crack diagonally from corner to corner and the left side had bright colored lines running down it.  Our tv, less than 48 hours old, was damaged!  We called Costco and honestly explained it was damaged during installation. They directed us to their Costco Concierge Technical Support who we talked with several times.  Because it was our error, the warranty was void and they could do nothing but send us on to Samsung who also would do nothing but give us the name of a repair person in Provo.  They added that it was probably not worth the money to repair.

Re: Just Do It

To answer your questions, no specific time frame has been given for the temple but they have said "late 2018" so that means closure is over 18 months. Man we are so spoiled here!

Re: Love Dad

And with our luck, you'd be called to serve in the San Antonio mission, in the Austin area ;) The ultimate irony!

I love this thread and I have lots of thoughts.

First to Blaine and Kristi - I'm glad you got to hear dad express the thoughts in his heart.  I hope and think you felt the great love he and I have for you.

At the close of Blaine's letter he talked about walking by faith, one step at a time.  That is such good advice!  Sometimes things come into clarity and focus as you ponder and consider options and even take a step into the darkness.   We pray you guys do what is right for YOUR family.

One of the many blessings in my life is that you guys are keeping YOUR family strong.  I think about the scripture about cleaving to each other.  I think Blaine and Kristi are such good examples of that.  I cherish the tribute Kris gave to Blaine on their anniversary/Valentines Day on Instagram.  She talked about how marrying Blaine was the best decision she has ever made.  That brought me, as a mom, so much joy.  It really is the bottom line.  I feel that same way about dad and now to get to hear it from my kids is just the best!  So in reality, that is what counts the most.  Of course I want you guys to be close to us and to each other.  But more importantly I want you to be building a strong family.

As you consider what to do - not just Blaine and Kristi but all of you - I hope you will always do what is best for you and what you want and feel s right.  I would never want someone to move close just to do me a favor or expect that life would be a certain way.  Do it because that is what YOU really feel s best.  Otherwise, I'm sure we could never live up to anyone's expectations!

BAWB letters.  Our conversation on Sunday with Blaine made me resolve to do better at writing more regularly. And for encouraging others to do the same.   I really think one of the valuable things dad's Bassett family has is the record of everyone's life because of the Bark.  And that happened mostly because they were spread apart.  I admit that I do find it more motivating to write when someone is far away.  And in the process of everyone writing and reading your letters I feel I learn more than I ever do sitting at the Sunday dinner table.  Back when we all wrote to Max pretty regularly I remember thinking over and over again what a blessing it was to feel what was in your heart through your letters.  So having said that, I resolve to do better in writing regularly.  I know I will mess up so let's keep on giving each other encouragement.  And frankly nothing encourages me more than when I get a response, short or long, that someone has read and enjoyed my letter.  It shows you care about the details in my life.

Just for the record - OF COURSE I would love to have everyone live close by.  It is SO FUN to have Janey, Warner, Griff and Rosey so close and Nick and Stef's gang not much further.  And Max close enough to come at least a couple times a month.  We all definitely have our own very busy lives, but when we make time to get together it is joyous!  It's selfish to want it to be easy and painless to see each other often.   But it is so darn nice and natural to have it this way.  But that being said, I want people here because that is where they choose to be!  And when anyone can't be close by I want to do my best to keep our family bonds as strong as possible.

Sure love you all!

Love,
Mom

Thank you Dad and everyone else who has replied for your kind words, both in this email and on the phone. We too feel bad to be hogging all the sweetness so that none of you quite understand exactly how sweet little Tess is or how fun and scary it is to see how fast the other kids are learning and growing. Oh, and Dad, you never have to apologize to me for being "blubbery and tear soaked." I totally understand that and can be horrible with it too, although I can never predict what it is that will get to me. For whatever reason, I did okay on the phone yesterday but ask me to read an article from the Friend to a kid or explain the plot of almost any even moderately touching movie and I'm a mess. Anyway, we sure appreciate you and Mom taking the time to talk yesterday and we appreciated and learned much from the wisdom that you shared with us, so thanks.

I too had a hard time explaining myself on the phone yesterday, both to you and Mom, and then later to Nick, who was fun to call later right before we went to bed. We do yearn to be closer--both physically and emotionally--to all of you, and the distance does make that difficult. We miss the letters that we were all much more inclined to write when Max was still in Spain. If I miss anything about my old job and the commute associated with it, it is the excuse I had to call and see if I could get a hold of anyone to shoot the breeze and catch up. A year and a half into our life in Texas and much of that has slowed or stopped and we miss it a lot. On the one hand, that scares me and makes me feel panicky that if we stay here and I don't really get our rear in gear to fix things, our precious relationships with family could be permanently weakened. When we moved here we thought about the Bassett side of the family (as in the Dick and Janice Bassett family) as a model of how a family can be spread out and still stay incredibly close. However, we have learned that Bark letters don't write themselves, trips and reunions don't just magically happen, and emotional closeness does not occur by accident across vast distances.

So the solution must be simple--we just need to move back. I wish it were that simple. Unfortunately, I think emotional closeness also does not occur by accident across distances of even a few miles. Maybe if it worked for us to move next door to one of you--to really be involved in one another's everyday lives in a similar way as Mom got to be involved with her family as next door neighbors or just across the fields--we couldn't help but be close. But what if we don't live quite that close? I guess the realization for me has been that uprooting our life and moving across the country once again is one way that we could do our part to help strengthen the relationships we all treasure. Mom and Dad paying thousands of dollars for Disneyworld trips or anyone using their vacation time and money to visit us or to come watch our kids or whatever are also great ways to do this. But these are just a few of the biggest and most dramatic ways of staying close. Driving up to Sunday dinner at Mom and Dad's, random phone calls, emails, quick replies to emails, text messages, Facebook/Instagram comments, FaceTime messages, birthday cards, attending cousin's sports games, and a hundred other things also help us stay close and are important too. Some of these require physical proximity. Many of them, thanks to technology we all have available to us, do not.

There are a lot of factors that we are weighing as we consider where to move next. I think we could very well end up in Utah and I think it is also possible that we won't. Like dad encouraged, a lot of it will depend on what we feel like the Lord wants us to do (not sure about that yet) and if He feels that we have accomplished what He needed us here for. But regardless of what we do next, I know we all agree that these relationships with each other are worth fighting for. We can't wait for DisneyWorld and we love hearing that y'all are getting together so often and staying close by so many in-person visits. We are cheering you on to keep that going from here. At the same time, we hope that we can continue to prioritize and even to recommit ourselves to doing some of the other things that will help us stay close. I hope I'm not sounding preachy or anything, because I really am preaching to myself more than anyone else. (It's like a take on that old thing you'd hear in seminary: "If you don't feel as close to God as you did yesterday, who moved?" where you replace "God" with "your family".)

I just want to thank you all for all that you do of these things, and to commit myself to trying harder. Like Kristi said, the question for today doesn't have to be where we are going to spend the rest of our lives--it can just be what color of paint to pick for the family room. I'm a big believer that walking by faith usually happens one step at a time and that's what we'll have to accept for now. But I do hope you know that we do love you and miss you like crazy, and that we feel your love and prayers from afar as well. Thanks for making this such a great family to be a part of!

Love,
Blaine

P.S. Nick, I have to say that your resume question definitely fits under the category of things that can be discussed without physical proximity being a requirement. I would always love to get a phone call from you about something like that. Not that my advice would be as good as Dad's was even if you had called--incidentally, I think his instinct on that is spot on and a great way to go. Good luck! :)

Dad, you are so sweet, and we were all touched by our conversation.  I don't think either of us was able to express what we feel very well. It's hard to explain to someone else in a few minutes something that you spend hours and hours thinking and talking about each week (if not each day!). We always do appreciate your love and wisdom! And appreciate your patience as we try to condense our thoughts into a brief conversation.

It is hard to be far away and know we are missing out on so much. I was telling Blaine the other day how frustrating it has been that I've been in Texas for most of my kids' first years. Tess is SO cute and is so fun and it is heartbreaking knowing that you guys don't get to see it and to know her personality as it is right now. It's really hard. And I miss being there to watch Griff and Bret and clay and Ned grow- and to meet Ashley and on and on.

At the same time we are learning and growing and doing things that we wouldn't be if we were still there. I know our family is benefitting from this experience.

Where to go from here? I don't know. This is one of those years...one of the ones with too many decisions to make and to many things to do that when I think about it all I just want to hide in my closet and eat cookies :)

The last year I had like that (2014-- with a birth, surgery, finals, the bar, a move, a new job- all in one summer), the way I coped was to just think --- I know that I will wake up one day in mid September... By then I will have had a baby, Blaine will have taken the bars, we will have chosen a house and packed up and moved and unpacked, and I'll wake up that September day and everything will be done, so until then I'll chug along and make decisions on a day to day basis that will get me there.

That's how I feel this year too. I want to hide, but instead I'll do my best each day and hopefully by the end of summer our house will be sold, decisions will be made, and I'll wake up somewhere (here, or Utah, or maybe Kauai ;) and it will be the right place- so long as I do my best to make my best decisions on a day to day basis. I'm not going to choose where to move tomorrow. Tomorrow I'm going to choose the color of paint to paint our round rock house. It's the best I can do tomorrow, and it's enough.

We sure appreciate the love and the conversation, we are grateful that we get to be a part of this family no matter where we live- and we can't wait to see y'all in Disney!

Much love!

Love,

Kris

Just got off the phone with Blaine where I told he and his family how much we love them and miss them at our family dinners each week.  It's so fun to see Griffeth take his first steps, and see the 3 boys get ready for their little sister to arrive in the world.  And I feel bad that I am not having those same experiences with Ben and Tess and Ivy and Gwen.  And when I tried to tell them how I felt, it all came out all blubbery and tear soaked.

So first my apology to Blaine and Kristi.  I am not really all that crippled emotionally that I'm going to die without you close.  I get that there are famililes that hate each other even though they are right next door.  And those who are super loving and loyal and close even though they are far far away.

I guess the best I can say, is do what the Lord tells you to do.  We'll do the same, and we'll both be just fine.  I do think that the Lord put you there for an as-yet-undetermined reason.   (Unless the reason was to learn that Big Law was not where he wanted you to work)   So I promise we will not judge if you come or don't come.

Just know that we love and miss you and can't wait for disneyworld.

I'm becoming worse and worse at writing... probably because I am on emails a lot of my work day.  I'll try and do better.

Re: Love Dad

Ha ha Stef, you're not a lone. I know many people that function off of proximity. Which is sad when you're the only non-proximate person. I'm glad we can have our very succinct text convos to keep us connected ;) If only Utah had as much land for sale as Texas, we could just buy a compound and all move there! I really do have a friend who just did that here, they bought 8 acres, and his brother bought another 11, her mother-in-law bought a tiny house just off the back of hers. It's a proximity lovers dream! I'd probably get on your nerves if we were that close though, sometimes I am tolerated better at a distance ;)

Miss you!

And having sleepovers with them! I'll try and write more, but that simply does not help me feel any closer to your kids, which makes me so sad. So I guess the solution is to figure out a way to get more time off so that I can fly to Texas more.

Sorry if my message sounds more grumpy. I am just laying in my bed after a long day with cramps. And I simply miss y'all.

Good luck! :)
